Contrary to what experts say, there is no right or wrong when it comes to what to eat or how much before a workout. It has been my experience that people perform better if on the way to the gym they had a piece of toast or half a granola bar in their system before working out. You will have to play around with what works for you. Working out on a empty stomach will inhibit you from working out at a high intensity level, so you should eat something.
Side Note: Know that having carbs in your system is like throwing gasoline on the fire that is burning your fat. You need carbs! The Atkins diet is dumb! Underneath the BS of diet fads like Atkins and South Beach is a calorie restricted diet. You can do that without ditching one of the 3 categories of your diet: Carbs, Protein, and Fat.
At the very least, have some coffee or water when you wake up (easy on the sugar and cream!). Stay away from anything sugary, including diet shakes. Play around with healthy carbs like an apple or some oatmeal. When you find out what works for you, stick with it!
