Activity: Monster Draw

Objective:

Participants will practice communication skills and creativity through a game called Monster Draw that encourages accurate communication and good listening skills.

Materials:

  • Images of cartoon monsters

  • Writing tools (pencils, markers, crayons, etc.)

  • Paper or flat surface to use for drawing using, clipboards, markerboards, etc.)

Setup (2 minutes):

  1. Introduce the game by explaining that participants will be playing a game called Monster Draw.

  2. Explain the game's rules: two people will sit back to back, one person will have an image of a cartoon monster, and the other will have writing tools. The person with the image will describe how to draw the monster, and the person with the writing tools will draw what they hear.

  3. Neither can see what the other is doing until the end.

  4. Emphasize that communication is key to this game, and encourage students to ask questions and clarify instructions.

Activity (10-20 minutes):

  1. Divide the group into pairs and have them sit back to back.

  2. Give one person in each pair an image of a cartoon monster and the other person writing tools.

  3. Instruct the person with the image to describe the monster to their partner, who will draw what they hear. Neither is allowed to see what the other is doing until the end.

  4. Allow students 5 minutes to complete the drawing.

  5. After the drawing is complete, have the pairs turn around and compare the drawing to the original image.

Closure (10 minutes):

  1. Bring the group back together and ask for volunteers to share their drawings.

  2. Discuss the importance of accurate communication and how it can affect the outcome of a task.

  3. Encourage participants to reflect on their experience with the game and ask for feedback on what they learned.
