the teacher that changed my life

When I was in high school, I failed algebra twice with the same teacher. She told me I just wasn’t good at math and there was nothing I could do about it.

My senior year I took another try at algebra but “knew” I would fail. I told my new teacher this and he told me all I needed was to know one equation to be good at math.

He asked me to write it on the board as he told it to me.

“Write the letter Y, please.”

I did it.

“Now the letter E.”

No problem, teacher.

“Good, now the letter T, please. What does that say?”

It says “Yet” but how is that a formula in math?” I asked.

It’s the only formula you need to know to be good at anything. Once you have mastered the idea of YET, then you can be sure that understanding is right around the corner. Now sit down, you have a math class to pass.”

Shout out to Mr. Swain, you changed my life. Thank you
